Keeping up with the latest news in our industry can be tough with all the other priorities in our daily lives. So to help you (and us) keep abreast of the news and analysis in the ever-changing world of Edge Computing, we are excited to introduce ‘The Buzz in Edge.’ In our new monthly feature on the Scale Computing blog, our team of Edge Computing experts will curate their favorite Edge Computing stories from the far corners of the Web. So without further ado, here’s our inaugural edition for August, 2021.
Our first article comes from veteran IT journalist Mike Vizard of IT Business Edge who explores the unexpected security vulnerabilities that can accompany an edge deployment and the steps IT organizations can take to prepare themselves:
"Adoption of edge computing platforms has begun to soar as organizations discover the benefits of processing and analyzing data in near real time at the point where it is created and consumed. The only fly in the ointment now is that with each edge computing platform that gets added to the extended enterprise the attack surface that needs to be defended expands."

Next up comesBreaking Down the Data Paradox, a webcast interview between technology analyst Shelley Kramer of Futurum Research and Matt Baker, SVP at Dell Technologies. Shelley and Matt discuss the challenges organizations have with the massive amounts of data they create, collect, and need to run their business and the crucial role that edge computing is having in fueling strategic initiatives such as Digital Transformation:
In the Data Paradox study, you found that 64% of respondents said that they intend to keep a significant amount of data in the data centers they own and control. And that only 35% are looking to increase proof of concept data uses at the edge. That’s a really low number, and it tells me that a significantly large group of people don’t really understand the role that edge computing plays and how compute and storage at the edge are incredibly important business capabilities and business drivers.
In the manufacturing sector, the notion of Industry 4.0 promises to usher in a new era of smart manufacturing, with edge computing playing a central role in this transformative shift. In The Industrial Edge-to-Cloud Strategy, a five-minute video hosted by Automation World, content producer David Greenfield explains why “it’s not whether you’ll use cloud or edge computing, but how you’ll combine the two” and shows how manufacturers are integrating industrial edge platforms into their facilities.
Edge computing is of course disrupting practically every industry vertical and the government market is no exception. In Infrastructure Delivers Autonomous Edge Solutions, freelance writer Stephanie Kanowitz of Government Computing News writes about the Texas Military Department’s innovative pilot testing of autonomous solutions at the edge. Aiming to accelerate emergency and disaster response for intelligent infrastructure, these solutionswill ultimately “allow the department to deploy autonomous vehicles such as helicopters and drones instead of putting humans at risk during search and rescue missions.”
And for our final edge computing story for the month of August, be sure to check outEcosystems at The Edge: Where the Data Center Becomes a Marketplace written by long-time technology journalist and author Paul Gillin in Data Center Frontier. In this piece, Gillin looks at the emerging and varied business opportunities that computing at the edge will bring about in the coming years:
The bigger picture sees edge as an extension of cloud hubs and corporate data centers into regions and applications that can’t be served adequately by today’s cloud infrastructure. That opens up a host of new business opportunities...the opportunity for businesses to leverage the edge to spawn ecosystems that generate new revenue. To realize this value, companies must think of the edge as more than just a collection point for data from intelligent devices. They should broaden their vision to see the edge as a new business hub.
